Paralegal career

By Kristen Golmes at 2010-03-11 03:15:38

Imagine a job that offers the chance to learn about the legal system and make an impact on the lives of others. A paralegal career is the closest some people come to working in the legal profession.

To put it quite simply, a paralegal is an assistant for a legal professional, such as a lawyer. The paralegal is thus a legal assistant. They cannot try cases, but their main job profile includes assisting lawyers and other legal professionals who they work for prepare for their cases and do other clerical and accounting jobs such as might be included in their tasks.

You should be able to work well under pressure. The way a case is going might change with the course of research. Sometimes, you might find little facts that turn the case around. If you are rigid and do not like it when things go your way or plain are not comfortable regarding surprises, then you will have difficulty in the paralegal career. To be a paralegal, you need to be adaptable.

The first thing you might consider is being a virtual paralegal. Staying home and making your own hours sounds like the dream job to almost everyone. So you start doing some research and realize it is not as easy as it sounds. Most people want an experienced paralegal and not someone that just got out of school. You are not even sure what your niche is yet. You soon realize that even though you've had a great deal of education that the legal field is vast, so much so that you question whether or not your education was a waste of time. It is easy to quickly get discouraged, down on yourself, and begin to pout, but we all know that won't get you anywhere. It especially won't pay your student loan bills or any other ones for that matter!

A missing witness? Keep trying to locate him, and stop when you do. A file has disappeared? Search until it's found and ask others for assistance. Feeling brain-dead while summarizing a very dry deposition transcript? Get up and stretch, look out a window for a few minutes while you feel yourself relaxing. Then don your determination again, and get back to the grind. Legal assistants who excel in their jobs are dedicated to completing tasks.

Real estate paralegals are one of the most common areas of paralegal work. These paralegals undertake various tasks such as preparing closings, performing due diligence, liaising with clients during the purchase and contract exchange process of property sales, and researching the title and administrative processes. Real estate law takes in all aspects of buying and selling property as well as the finance and leasing of property (both commercial and residential). Paralegals work closely with property solicitors to ensure the property exchange process goes smoothly.

A paralegal career is a professional career that can be started with less than a bachelor's degree, yet provide the returns of a bachelor's degree salary with some on-the-job experience. There are a few schools that offer a bachelor's degree in paralegal studies, but more often you will see an associate degree for paralegal studies or a certificate for paralegal studies. Although licensing is not required, getting a paralegal license through the American Paralegal Association can improve your employability, and position you to be more eligible to work in lucrative firms.

A paralegal career certainly does not have to be a springboard to be successful and fulfilling. Legal assistants can enjoy their careers in the long-term. These are solid careers with as much learning and opportunity for advancement as the candidates opt to create for themselves. Some people enjoy their careers in a particular area of law so much they stick with it, be it the very same position or the same type of position. Others take the opportunity to work in different areas. Either way, these careers are filled with learning and new experiences.
